Before photography was invented, botanical art was the only method available for the scientific documentation of plants. In recent years this art form has undergone a resurgence to enter what many call the Golden Age of botanical art. Filoli is part of this resurgence with our Florilegium, which documents plants grown at Filoli. The entire collection of more than 30 original paintings by local and international artists will be on display throughout the House during the Spring season.

    February 23 – May 20, 2018

20th Annual Botanical Art Exhibition: A Palette of Flowers

Filoli’s 20th Annual Botanical Art Exhibition celebrates the abundance of spring flowers in the Estate’s magnificent historic Garden. The beautiful and extraordinarily accurate flower portraits are painted by international and local artists, some of them graduates of Filoli’s Botanical Art Certificate Program. Media used to create botanical paintings include watercolor, colored pencil, pen and ink, oil, and graphite.

With spring around the corner, they thought it would be fun to explore the emergence of life from its beginnings.
